Background of the Study

Infection control measures are crucial in reducing the transmission of infectious diseases, especially in emergency departments where patients with various infectious conditions are treated. Emergency nurses play a vital role in the implementation of infection control practices such as proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and isolation protocols. This study aims to investigate how emergency nurses’ adherence to infection control measures affects the quality of care and patient outcomes in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH).

Statement of the Problem

In emergency departments, the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is higher due to the high volume of patients, urgency of care, and exposure to various pathogens. While infection control measures are well-established, the level of adherence among emergency nurses may vary, affecting the incidence of infections. This study will assess how well emergency nurses adhere to infection control protocols and how this impacts patient safety.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of adherence to infection control measures by emergency nurses at UUTH.
  2. To evaluate the effect of emergency nurses’ adherence to infection control measures on patient outcomes.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by emergency nurses in adhering to infection control protocols.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adherence to infection control measures among emergency nurses at UUTH?
  2. How does adherence to infection control measures by emergency nurses affect patient outcomes in the emergency department?
  3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in adhering to infection control protocols at UUTH?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses’ adherence to infection control measures does not significantly affect patient outcomes in UUTH.
  2. There are no significant challenges faced by emergency nurses in adhering to infection control measures in UUTH.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the emergency nurses at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital and assess their adherence to infection control measures. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported adherence levels and the availability of sufficient data on patient outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Infection Control Measures: Protocols and practices aimed at preventing the spread of infectious diseases, such as hand hygiene, PPE usage, and isolation practices.
  • Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs): Infections acquired by patients during the course of receiving healthcare treatment.
  • Emergency Nurses: Nurses working in the emergency department, responsible for providing urgent care to patients.
